velluters

The Velluters building is the centre where the courses for the College of Design are taught (Fashion Design, Product Design, Interior Design, Graphic Design) This is a newly created building, and it is situated within the educational complex in the old quarter of the city known as Velluters, in the historical centre of the city of Valencia.

This medieval quarter of the city is situated next to the walls of the city (what is today the ring avenue known as Carrer Guillem de Castro) and today near the monumental Quart gates to the city. The Velluters quarter, which is also known as the Pilar, and in ancient times as the Torres de Macià Martí, was, up until the c. XIX, the area where the workers in the first Valencian textile industry plied their trade. A multitude of workshops produced silk (the building of the Silk Association Headquarters still exists in the quarter) and above all velvet (vellut), from where this area of the city gets its name. It was, therefore, a zone filled with workshops, with the workers and their masters, with the strong stamp of the manufacturing and working-class, and this tradition of the past now links up with the presence of the College of Design and its technological projection towards the future.
